All urologists, who are members of the SAUA, and have an interest in laser prostatectomy are invited to attend. The aim of the meeting is to formally establish a small committee, under the auspices of the SAUA, to manage and promote the interests of surgeons who perform laser enucleation of the prostate. We envisage a small working group with regional representatives, consisting of 4-8 members.

The aims of such an interest group would include, but are not limited to:

• To promote the procedure and provide education to urologists
• To provide information to the public
• To negotiate appropriate reimbursement with funders and educate urologist regarding appropriate billing practices
• To discuss and advise on industry involvement in training
• To develop a consensus opinion on appropriate training
• To lead and co-ordinate audit and possibly research projects in the field

Dr Evelyn Moshokoa, founder of the Evelyn Moshokoa Foundation is organising a 3-day interactive surgical workshop, 7-9 June 2024, in Pretoria, https://urologyreconstruct.co.za/. Please note: Space is limited to 100 people.

This will be an interactive workshop, showcasing at least 20 surgeries, which will be live streamed from 2 theatres per day from Steve Biko Academic Hospital and Urology Hospital, Pretoria, to the Protea Hotel Fire & Ice, Menlyn. The programme will Include live surgery, talks, case presentations and trade symposia.

Focus of the surgeries will be:

Urethral strictures
Bulbar
Penile PFUD
Meatal stenosis
Urethral diverticulum
Fistula repair
Penile prosthetics
Both malleable and inflatable
Male slings
Male AUS (Sphincter)

The primary objective of the meeting is to teach and to learn the most effective surgical techniques, so as to ensure each procedure is executed correctly the first time, in so doing ensuring minimal occurrences of relapse and ultimately improve patient outcomes and their quality of life, which is too often very adversely affected for many years, as they are public sector patients.

We would like to encourage doctors working and consulting on cases requiring reconstructive surgery in South Africa and the rest of Africa to attend.

Medical error has continued to be on the front burner of discussions in the medical field, particularly within specialties where adverse events are still regarded as being high. The causes of harm vary widely: slips of the scalpel, lapses like mixing up lab results, faulty decision-making, inadequate training, evasion of known safety practices, miscommunication, equipment failures, and many more. The objective of this symposium is to explore the prevalence of the “second victim” phenomenon among healthcare practitioners and to determine the impact of the adverse event on the second victim, identify the coping strategies employed and explore the possibility of improving on the coping strategies.
